We got the opportunity to visit the beautiful historic city of Charleston, and Mt Pleasant areas in South Carolina, United States. If you like history and are looking for something that is a fit for the whole family, it's a beautiful city I recommend visiting plus, it's close to a couple of beaches!
There are so many things to see and do, you won't get bored. Here are some of the sites we got to visit and that I recommend (of course there wasn't any place we visited there that I wouldn't recommend). Don't forget your camera!
- Patriots Point
is the Home of the USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier Ship and USS Clamagore Submarine. THey have tours you can go on to learn about the history and walk around both the ship and submarine.
- Fort Sumter
is a national monument where the Civil War began on April 11, 1861. It's on it's own island and is only accessible by boat through a tour company.
- The Battery
is a civil war landmark defensive seawall and promenade next to White Point Garden.
- White Point Garden
is located in the heart of the historic district in downtown Charleston. There are beautiful views of Charleston Harbor, Patriots Point, and Fort Sumter.
- Rainbow Row
features 13 historical and colorful homes you won't want to miss. It is the longest group of Georgia style row houses in the United States.
- Waterfront Park
is an 8 acre park along Cooper River and the Charleston Harbor. It's home of the famous pineapple fountain that kids of all ages can play in.
- Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge
is a cable-stayed bridge that stretches over the Cooper River connecting the cities of Charleston and Mt Pleasant. I recommend seeing it during sunset at at night. You can see my blog on it by

- Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park
is a unique park as it sits directly under the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. It's a great place for the kids to run, play and stretch their legs. Although, I do have to say it's scary thinking about the possibility of debris falling off the bridge!
- Angel Oak Tree
on Johns Island is an Oak tree estimated to be around 400 years old. It's a massive tree with branches that go everywhere, including along and under the ground! It has a circumference of 25.5 feet and covers 17,000 square feet. Now that's a big tree!
- James Island County Park
is a large park with something to do for everyone. There are camping sites, wall climbing, boating, 18 hole disc golf course, trails, dog park, water park and much more.
- Boone Hall Plantation
is one of America's oldest working plantations. It's also home to the beautiful and popular Avenue of Oaks and a couple movies have been filmed there. If you only have time to visit 1 plantation, I recommend this one!
- Folly Beach
is a city located on Folly Island, just south of Charleston. It's a cute little town along the beautiful sandy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean with a fishing pier that stretches out 1,000 feet over the ocean. There are also lots of cute shops along Center Street so you can shop your heart out and pick the perfect souvenir.
- Morris Island Lighthouse
is only visible from the beach. Constructed in 1876 it used to sit on land, but is now several hundred feet off shore in the ocean. You can read more about Folly Beach and Morris Island Lighthouse in my blog here.
